AVORIAZ RESORT GUIDE
Avoriaz is one of the most distinctive ski resorts in the French Alps, and one of the very few that was designed from the outset to be completely car-free. Perched at 1,800m on the edge of a dramatic cliff above Morzine, it sits at the heart of the vast Portes du Soleil ski area and is linked to resorts in both France and Switzerland. Around 1 hour 45 minutes from Geneva Airport, it is one of the most snow-sure destinations in the region, regularly receiving around eight metres of snowfall per season. Its bold 1960s architecture, all-natural timber facades and traffic-free streets give it an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in the Alps, and its compact, ski-in ski-out layout means you are on the mountain the moment you step outside your accommodation.
The skiing here is centred on the Portes du Soleil, a cross-border area covering 650km of pistes and 219 lifts connecting twelve French and Swiss villages. The slopes immediately above Avoriaz, particularly in the Hauts Forts sector, offer some of the best snow quality in the area and the terrain suits all levels from intermediates to advanced freeriders. The resort has long been one of the leading freestyle destinations in the Alps, with multiple terrain parks, a super-pipe, and the innovative Stash all-natural forest park developed in partnership with Burton Snowboards. For those willing to explore further, the Portes du Soleil opens up an enormous variety of terrain including the legendary Swiss Wall descent at La Chavanette and long powder runs down to Les Prodains, from where a cable car returns you to the resort.
Away from the slopes, Avoriaz has a character all of its own. The car-free village is safe and relaxed for families, with the award-winning Village des Enfants childcare and ski school widely regarded as one of the best in the Alps. The resort has a lively apres scene anchored by La Folie Douce on the piste and a good selection of restaurants, bars and mountain eating spots. Non-skiers and families will also find dog sledding, snowshoeing, an indoor water park, a floodlit skating rink, and regular live music events throughout the season. Whether you are chasing powder on the Hauts Forts, lapping the terrain parks, or looking for a convenient and snow-sure base for a family ski holiday, Avoriaz delivers in a way that few resorts can match.
